"Alternate Picking"

Alternate picking means : Down/Up/Down/Up/Down/Up and so-on. Try this on the "Low E" string.  Remember to anchor your hand on or near the bridge and use your wrist,  not your whole arm.  First you will do it without an ACCENT (see music terms page for the meaning of accent). Then you will do it with an ACCENT.
